In 2025, Høglund upgraded M/S Høydal’s AKON automation and LNG gas control system, ensuring modern, reliable operation.

Vessel Information

Retrofitted: 2025
Owner: NKS Shipping
Segment: Feed Supply Carrier (Cargo)
Yard: Tersan Shipyard

Delivered from Tersan Shipyard in Turkey in June 2012, M/S Høydal was described as the world’s first gas-powered cargo vessel and the largest feed supply carrier ever built. The vessel was originally equipped with a Rolls-Royce (RR) AKON automation system.

In 2022, Høydal experienced issues with its LNG tank, which required a complete replacement of the LNG system. As part of this upgrade, the vessel’s AKON automation system also had to be replaced, as it had been classified as obsolete.

Alongside the automation retrofit, Høglund integrated new gas control and gas safety systems with CHART. The retrofit of the AKON system was carried out at Tersan Shipyard (formerly Havyard Leirvik) during the LNG system replacement.

Høglund’s previous experience with similar UMAS (an earlier version of AKON) replacements, combined with our flexible HMI platform that can easily be adapted on site, ensured a fast and efficient installation process — with positive feedback from both the shipyard and the owner.

Note:

Newer AKON deliveries are based on the B&R hardware platform, which is now owned by ABB. Høglund has developed solutions allowing the replacement of AKON controllers while retaining existing B&R I/O modules. This approach enables even faster retrofit projects at a more competitive cost.
